DID YOU KNOW THAT INSURANCE COMPANIES MUST PROVIDE LACTATION SUPPORT?

The Affordable Care Act states, “Health insurance plans must provide breastfeeding support, counseling, and equipment for the duration of breastfeeding. These services may be provided before and after birth.”
WHAT
TO
EXPECT
Most visits will last 60-90 minutes, but may be a little more or less depending on your particular situation.
A lactation consultation with an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) is a crucial appointment for families after the birth of their baby. During the visit, the consultant provides reassurance, makes adjustments for improvement, and creates a comprehensive feeding plan if necessary. The appointment includes a thorough assessment, a weighted feed if necessary, problem-solving, counseling, education, follow-up plan, and communication with the baby's doctor as necessary. It is recommended to write down any questions you have prior to your appointment. If you have any feeding devices being utilized, breast pump, or feeding/diaper log, please have these readily accessible for your appointment.

Prenatal visit topics include how your body makes milk, importance of skin- to-skin contact, recognizing feeding cues, how to know that your baby is getting enough milk, positioning, latch techniques, normal infant feeding behaviors, when/how to introduce alternative feeding methods, pumping, and breast pump flange sizing.

Empowering yourself with knowledge and education prior to the birth of your baby can help maximize success with your lactation goals. I am here to help educate and empower you and your family to meet your specific goals.
